Announcements of an urgent nature, such as disruptions of network connectivity and scheduled and unscheduled maintenance of servers, are posted here.

Linux Reboots and Updates (January 2021)

Linux compute nodes and desktop machines will be rebooted on Thursday, January 14th for software and security updates. These updates will be applied to machines between 7:00 pm and midnight. In an effort to try and minimize any corrupted files or lost work, please save all your data and log out of any Linux systems before 7:00 pm.

The following is a list of machines that already have the updates, so you may test any critical packages or code beforehand:

  • pubbox29
  • pubbox31
  • pubbox37
  • pubbox42
  • pubbox47
  • pubbox57

Server Reboots and IP Address changes on Saturday, July 25.

On Saturday, July 25th, 2020, between 2 pm and 6 pm, most of Courant's computer systems will be rebooted to facilitate IP address changes to our main file servers for home, data, and web directories, as well as Courant email and web services. This is part of a general Courant server network infrastructure upgrade that should improve service.

This window of time does not mean everything will be down for that entire time or all at once, but most services will be impacted at one point during this time. Offfice desktop computers and compute nodes will likely be rebooted first to clear filesystem mounts from the servers and make the process go as smoothly as possible

Because server IP addresses are being changed, there may be some delay in the propagation of new addresses to DNS services around the internet, so remote applications, such as directory mounts and browser connections (eg, reload pages), might need to be reinitialized.
